Role Purpose
A Microwave Installation Technician specializes in the physical deployment, alignment, and commissioning of microwave radio links that form the backbone of wireless communication networks.
Core Responsibilities
- Site Deployment: Physically installing Indoor Units (IDU) and Outdoor Units (ODU) on towers, rooftops, or monopoles.
- Antenna Alignment: Using specialized tools to align microwave dishes with extreme precision to achieve the required Received Signal Level (RSL) based on the link budget.
- Commissioning & Integration: Configuring software parameters such as link IDs, transmission frequencies, and modulation settings via a web interface or specialized software.
- Testing & Validation: Measuring transmission signal quality using frequency counters, spectrum analysers, and power meters to ensure the link meets performance specifications.
- Infrastructure Setup: Running and terminating critical cabling, including IF (Intermediate Frequency), fiber optics, and DC power cables, while ensuring proper grounding and weatherproofing
- Troubleshooting: Diagnosing issues like signal degradation, co-channel interference, or hardware malfunctions by inspecting waveguides, connectors, and power supplies.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Work at Heights: Often requires a "Working at Heights" or Fall Arrest certification, as most installations occur on high structures.
- Experience/Education: High school diploma or equivalent, with technical training or previous experience in telecommunications in a similar role
- Equipment Knowledge: Experience with industry-standard hardware like Ericsson, or Huawei microwave systems.
- Physical Stamina: The role is physically demanding, involving heavy lifting and working in remote outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
- Safety Protocols: Familiarity with the OHS Act and specific site safety standards.
Working Conditions
- Working as an RF Installations Technician is physically rigorous and requires a high level of situational awareness due to the combination of field-based hazards and technical demands.
Physical & Environmental Conditions
- Work at Heights: You will frequently work on telecommunication towers, rooftops, and elevated pathways. Use of safety harnesses and fall protection systems is mandatory for work exceeding certain heights (typically 1.5m to 2m depending on local regulations).
- Challenging Weather: Technicians are exposed to all weather extremes, including intense heat, wind, rain, and cold. Installations may be paused during severe storms or high winds for safety.
- Physical Exertion: The role involves bending, climbing, and lifting equipment that can exceed 20kg–35kg. You must be able to move constantly and perform overhead work for extended periods.
