Role Purpose
Radio Network Optimization (RNO) technicians in South Africa play a crucial role in ensuring that mobile networks (2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, and 5G) meet performance, capacity, and quality standards. Working on projects for major operators (e.g., MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom) and vendors (Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia), these professionals analyse network data to optimize coverage and user experience, often working with Drive Test data and Network Management Systems (NMS).
Core Responsibilities
- Performance Monitoring & KPI Improvement: Monitoring network Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) daily, identifying degradation in areas/clusters, and analysing root causes.
- Drive Test (DT) Analysis: Conducting drive tests (active testing) and Call Quality Tests (CQT) to collect data on coverage and performance.
- Post-Processing & Reporting: Using tools like Actix, TEMS Discovery, Nemo Analyzer, or Genex Assistant to analyse log files, generate SSV (Single Site Verification) reports, cluster reports, and benchmarking reports.
- Parameter Optimization: Adjusting radio parameters (e.g., Antenna Tilt, Azimuth, Power, Height, Neighbour lists, Handover settings) based on RSRP, SINR, and handover analysis.
- Interference & Capacity Analysis: Identifying external/internal interference, managing frequency plans (PCI planning in LTE/5G), and recommending capacity expansions (e.g., adding carriers or small cells).
- Site Survey & Acceptance: Performing Initial Site Surveys (ISS) and conducting acceptance tests for new site activations or swaps.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Work at Heights: Candidate requires a "Working at Heights" and specifically Rope Access / Abseiling Qualifications and Skill Set, as most installations occur on high structures.
- Experience/Education: High school diploma or equivalent, with technical training or previous experience in telecommunications in a similar role
- Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of 2G/3G/4G/5G technology call flows, signalling, and radio propagation models.
- Tool Experience: Proficiency in OEM OSS platforms (Huawei M2000/iManager PRS, Ericsson ENM, ZTE U31) and post-processing tools (Nemo, Actix, TEMS).
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyse large datasets and perform "worst cell" analysis.
- Data Analysis Tools: Advanced MS Excel (macros, pivot tables) and map-based analysis using MapInfo or Google Earth.
Context-Specific Tasks (South African Projects)
- 5G FWA Rollout: Significant focus on 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) rollout, including propagation modelling and beam pattern optimization.
- Re-farming Projects: Working on 2G/3G spectrum re-farming to 4G/5G.
- Customer Experience Focus: Ensuring high quality of service (QoS) for VIP, Corporate, and Government clients.
Working Conditions
- Physical and Technical Work: Involves adjusting radio network parameters, antenna down tilting, and re-orientation.
- High-Pressure Environment: Technicians work under pressure to meet tight project deadlines and maintain network KPI standards.
- Tools and Technology: Exposure to advanced RF equipment like spectrum analysers and network management systems (e.g., NetNumen).
- Regional Variation: Projects often involve travelling to different, sometimes remote, areas in South Africa for site maintenance.

Physical & Environmental Conditions
- Work at Heights: You will frequently work on telecommunication towers, rooftops, and elevated pathways. Use of safety harnesses and fall protection systems is mandatory for work.
- Challenging Weather: Technicians are exposed to all weather extremes, including intense heat, wind, rain, and cold. Installations may be paused during severe storms or high winds for safety.
- Physical Exertion: The role
involves bending, climbing, and lifting equipment that
can exceed 20kg–35kg. You must be able to move constantly and perform
overhead work for extended periods.
